This car rental experience deserves a poor review for Europcar: We rented a Jimny specifically because it was winter in New Zealand, and we were concerned about rain and snow. The goal was to ensure driving safety with a 4WD vehicle, and also to take the opportunity to enjoy driving a Jimny during the trip. When we got to the rental counter, the staff saw that we had booked a Jimny and immediately whispered to someone nearby. Then, she came back and told us: "You booked a Jimny or an equivalent vehicle. There’s currently no Jimny available; instead, you’ll get a car of the same category." Hearing this, we were already halfway disappointed. However, we thought as long as the replacement was a 4WD, safety would still be guaranteed. So we explicitly told the staff that our itinerary included snowy mountain roads and that we needed a vehicle with 4WD for proper control and safety. To our surprise, she gave us a Yaris Cross (renting this car costs significantly less than a Jimny, by the way). I asked her three times to confirm whether the car was four-wheel drive (All-Wheel Drive) and if there were any other 4WD vehicles in the same category available. She insisted that the Yaris Cross was a 4WD, said there were no other options unless we paid for an upgrade, and started pitching various insurance options to us. In the end, we reluctantly agreed to take the Yaris Cross, added snow insurance as she suggested, and proceeded to pick up the vehicle. So far, everything seemed fine. Once we left the airport and headed to the parking lot, there it was—a shiny Jimny parked right next to our car. And as for the Yaris given to us, its door and body were covered with scratches and scrapes. At that point, we were feeling pretty unhappy, but we decided to overlook it since the damages didn’t affect functionality. Moreover, we wanted to make it to the lodge before dark, so we didn’t go back to argue. Little did we know, the drama was far from over. Driving from Queenstown to Wanaka went relatively smoothly, but upon reaching Mount Cook, we encountered lower temperatures and roads with a light mix of ice and gravel. Every time I stopped at a stop sign and tried to accelerate, the front wheels felt like they were slipping, as if losing traction completely. This alarmed us, so we looked it up online and discovered that the Yaris Cross isn’t even a 4WD! For the remainder of the trip, we had to drive extremely cautiously. We were fortunate not to encounter heavy snow; otherwise, the potential risk would have been unthinkable. Throughout this trip, we couldn’t understand why the rental staff falsely claimed the Yaris was a 4WD, why the available Jimny wasn’t rented to us, and why multiple insurance options were heavily promoted.

Lovely team. I forgot not to lock the car with the key but to use the remote- and ended up with the burglar alarm going off!!! but the team replied to my phone call immediately and solved the problem. All very good! I really liked the phone holder and multiple cables provided to allow me to use my cellphone for google maps. I thought the steering wheel lock was a bit over the top- maybe good for Shanhai but not really needed in Central Otago!

The car's trunk was scratched by the garage door, and I was charged 2000 NZD for repairs. Although I expected car repairs to be expensive in New Zealand, local friends informed me that this quote is twice as much as a 4S shop, which is quite unreasonable.

This would have to be the worst car rental experience that I have ever experienced having rented cars in most continents. I will recommend everyone NOT renting from EZU. Firstly, it took well over 30 mins for the van to pick us up from the airport. Then the car given to us was over 10 years old and had over 210k kms on the clock. We picked the car up at night. Inside the car was a mess and I didn’t even want to sit in the car as it was filthy with 10 years of grime on the inside.. The rental form had that there were no defects on the car and given that we couldn’t see at night we looked the next morning. It would be lucky if any panels of the car weren’t scratched. We could barely get the car over 80 kms per hour and the car would then start to shake making the car very unsafe. We called the office to complain about these things and never got a return phone call. Having rented a lot of cars over the world, I am sorry to say that this is by far the worst experience that I have ever had. The only positive comment is that your team didn’t try and claim damage insurance on the car when I returned.

The service was excellent, the car was in great condition, and the pickup and drop-off service was very prompt. Driving in New Zealand is super easy— the rental company provides a guide to New Zealand's traffic rules, and once you learn them, you can get accustomed very quickly, even if you rarely drive in your home country.

They deducted fees arbitrarily without sending an electronic invoice in advance. This happened one week to a month after the car was returned. The rental company did not inform about all the deductions beforehand, and it took nearly two months for them to refund this unexplained amount.

The insurance for the rental car seems almost mandatory. We might not have been very clear about this initially. When we got there, we said we didn't need insurance, but the rental company insisted that without it, we needed a credit card guarantee, and cash wasn't acceptable. This wasn't communicated to us beforehand during the rental process. I think your platform should explain this better. Since we didn't have a credit card, we were forced to buy the most expensive insurance (we could only buy the most expensive one? This feels like a forced sale), which was really frustrating.

Unfortunately we had terrible experience with Jucy. It was the only car rental company available , as everything else was fully booked . The car we were given was in horrible condition , very hard to drive. They charged us over $600 for 3 days and most of our last day we spent on one spot unable to start the car. The service provided when your car breakdown was the worse we ever experienced . We we holding on line for 30 min. Then we were told to stay by our car that someone is going to call back.. an hour later still no one called .. so we kept trying to call all different people , even an Jucy shuttle driver , after 2 hours we finally got on hold someone and AAA repair service was organized. .. no one showed up for an hour. Luckily the car "magically" started again otherwise we would be still stuck there now. We drove it straight to the office because we we worried to stop , that it wouldnt start again. The worse thing is that they washed it and put it back for rent. I really feel sorry for who ever gets the same car.

This is a local, small car rental company. Due to the pandemic, some branches have closed, making it difficult for me to return the car at a different location (I wanted to return it early because of the lockdown, but I couldn't because I couldn't book a ferry between the islands and had to stay near the port for an extra week. I noticed that other larger rental chains allowed flexible returns at the port). If you need flexible return options, you should pay attention to this. But this is probably only an issue during the pandemic. Although the company is small, their service is quite personalized; you can contact their staff anytime. I drove the car for almost a month, and they were very understanding of my changing plans whenever I checked in with them, which felt quite warm. The extension fee was charged at the original daily rate, which was very transparent. The car was not a 2017-18 model Corolla; I believe it was a 2012-13 model. It didn't have USB charging or music playback, but it was still fairly reliable despite being older.

I've rented cars overseas for many years, and this was the worst experience, hands down! First, our flight landed at 7 PM, but no one answered the phone when we called the car rental company. We had to take a taxi, costing nearly 30 NZD. The car rental location was very hard to find, and the GPS directions were off. Fortunately, the taxi driver was helpful, and we eventually found it. We picked up the car keys ourselves from a box at the entrance.

Everything about the car was fine and collection was super easy, staff were very lovely but there were no staff anywhere in the office when I returned the car which lead to me missing my flight. I was calling the office to try get help finding the drop off location and then had to just wait for someone to return to leave the car and get the shuttle to the airport.

Asked for a large SUV which we received however, the car didn't have a working radio with Bluetooth (it had an aftermarket radio). Told them we had to switch vehicles as we weren't going to use a car with no working radio in 2019. The staff were accommodating and advised we could swap for a car that had radio the following day, although it wasn't a 4WD. Annoying to have to go through this process but the staff was friendly.

The Queenstown branch is small, but they have a wide range of vehicles. However, once you arrive at the store, they will strongly recommend insurance, which is quite expensive. It is much cheaper to buy it in your home country. Britz's cars are relatively old; mine had 190,000 kilometers on it. If possible, I recommend Maui, whose cars are two to three years old, while Britz's are over three years old. KEA's cars are only one year old.

The car was in good condition, and the Chinese customer service was excellent. They delivered the car to my place in Queenstown, which was very convenient. However, when I returned the car half an hour early and left it in the airport parking lot, we didn't meet in person. I had cleaned the car before returning it, but since I didn't have a vacuum cleaner, there were some sand and a few food crumbs (just a few pumpkin seeds) left inside. They charged me 100 NZD for this, which is really unacceptable!
