They withheld a full tank deposit when picking up the car, but I didn't get it back when I returned the car. Self-service return was convenient, but the next morning I was told there was damage to the car. The local store couldn't resolve it; I had to wait for the platform's customer service to communicate with me.

The car's interior was quite old and not very clean. The main issue was that the costs were unclear throughout the process. Using a credit card, I paid a deposit beforehand, another deposit at the store, and was charged an additional 180 euros when returning the car. In the end, I still didn't understand how much I paid in total!

Hertz were very poor. When we arrived we were told that the car we booked was not available but we would be given an alternative. We waited over 90 minutes for a suitable car to find out it had been given to another customer. In the meantime we were offerred a much smaller car than we had booked (we booked a fullsize car (Alfa Romeo Julia or equivalent) as we are a family of 5), then were offered a small MPV which was in terrible condition-covered in dents and scratches, it looked as though someone had gone at it with a hammer!- the worst condition car I have ever been offered from a car rental. Finally, after much heated conversation we were given a large MPV (VW Touran) which had done over 100000 km. By then we had had enough and took it. Luckily it was fine and we had no mechanical problems. While we were trying to sort this all out it seemed every customer had a problem with the cars they were given. Be very wary of booking with Hertz! I will never use them again.

Good service marred by Hertz experience

The staff were very helpful, I couldn’t fault them. The car was in good condition, it did have quite a number of dents and scratches and the air conditioning did not work. We were in Italy during summer and at 35 degrees temperatures it got very hot and sweaty in the car. The car wasn’t as clean as I would have expected it to be either. Otherwise mechanically the car was sound. Overall it was a good driving experience in Europe.

Like: Quick and easy online reservation process. Provided a rental for reasonable price. Offered a slightly bigger car for no extra charges when they saw we had quite a few luggages. Offered upgrades for extra cost and was specific about differences in cost of options. Made sure we had all the information about our options to be able to make an informed decision. Tip!* Always get the super protection! You never know if someone causes damage to the car when it's parked. - a suggestion they made and it was worth it!
Dislike: Not able to make changes to reservation without cancelling previous reservation and making a new one. The person at the chat service informed me this was the only way to make changes. He was helpful, it would've been just more convenient if the option was there.
