You can walk to the counter of Europcar - Christchurch Airport car rental.

Christchurch Airport Counter is located within the Airport Main Terminal at Ground level. As you exit the customs area, please proceed to the ground level. 'Car Rental Pickup' signs are all over the Airport to direct customer to the counter. If you are arriving on a Domestic Flight, the Rental Pickup area is just opposite the luggage pickup area.

Towards any New Zealand islands, taking rental cars crossing islands is allowed with certain conditions.

Vehicles cannot travel on ferries. Europcar offers an inter-island service: return the car at one terminal and collect another on the next island. Only one exchange allowed per rental. Contact info@europcar.co.nz at least 5 days before ferry crossing.

Ferry Transportation: Not Allowed

Europcar does not allow to bring the rental vehicle to ferry. You will drop off your car at one port and collect another after crossing to the other island. A minimum of 3 days consecutive rental required in each island (If the minimum length of rental requirement is not met, then the rental will be charged as two separate hires.).

I would like to share a constructive feedbacks as follows: 1. Counter check in staff The counter staff were awesome and nice, they informed us in advance that they're new, they did their best to follow all the written instructions to help with the pick up process. Behind us there were 3 other customers. But shame for Europcar, they should have some senior staff to assist the new staff to avoid long queue and complaints. 2. Full tank for the new renter Make sure to check the fuel meter when the previous renter return the car to make sure it's full tank. I I picked the car up with millage at 3679km (pic.#1) , just realized when I was travelling at 3772km - mileage left to travel 765km (pic.#2), it was just 3km away from airport that the fuel meter showed only 15 bars (full tank is 16 bars). For the clear details at 3777km when I pulled over to take another photo (pic.#3). I didn't bother to return to the counter to complaint as I had an appointment that I was late because of the long process. In the middle of the trip, I refuelled and it showed 16 bars on the fuel meter and millage left to travel 926km (pic.#4). From this only, I felt cheated as if only I took the vehicle full tank, I would have travelled another 161km. Another clear information (pic.#5) when I refuelled again at the Z-petrol station by Frankton Road in Queenstown before return the vehicle at Queenstown airport which only 2.5km away. Again, millage left to travel still 957km and not 765km as when I picked up. Thank you.

Europcar Queenstown 034425887 Georgie (Europcar Christchurch airport) who helped us when we collected the car from Christchurch was awesome. She was so friendly and helpful. She allocated a brand new KIA Carnival for us (mileage was only 20 Km) which was a wonderful surprise. The car was so spacious and had all of the safety features that you expect from 2022 model. The Europcar counter is right in the domestic arrivals hall. We picked up the car around 9 am. There was no one in line, so we were helped immediately. All the counter staff were of Indian descent and had a bit of an accent, but they were very nice. They checked our passport, driver's license, and its translation, asked if we had bought insurance, and then gave us the car keys. We walked to the parking lot ourselves to pick up the car. The parking lot is left when you exit the arrivals hall. Compared to other car rentals at the airport, Europcar has relatively fewer parking spots.

I went to so much trouble to ensure I book a Ford Mustang (which is celebrating its 60 year anniversary in 2024) as a surprise for my wife who happened to turn 60 on the 29th September 2024. Needless to say it was impossible to find another Ford Mustang an hour before I was to book out of our hotel so we trundled along in a RAV 4 which I would not drive if you paid me back in Australia. As you can imagine it was an absolute mood spoiler on what should have been a HUGE surprise. I understand that cars get damaged (which is what I was told) but to then offer an entry level RAV 4 as replacement is a slap in the face – I would have thought that the least your company could have done was to offer us a complimentary upgrade – what I would have expected of your company was to advise me upfront that the vehicle was not available, when it became evident – but I guess that is too much to expect given the volumes of customers you deal with.

The rental staff were very friendly and gave us a brand-new pickup truck with just over 1,000 kilometers on it. The truck bed had a cover, providing a large storage space. We easily fit three suitcases inside with plenty of room to spare. The vehicle had great power, and we felt completely at ease even when driving through waterlogged roads while exploring several national parks. The return process was very efficient—they only asked if the tank was refueled and refunded the deposit quickly in no time.

Picking up and returning the car was very convenient and faster than expected, barely taking any time. The rental service was located right outside the airport and easy to spot. I didn’t get the Camry I booked and was given a Subaru instead. The accelerator felt a bit sensitive, but it struggled to gain power uphill. Not sure if it’s the model or just this particular car. Picked the Outback for Subaru’s AWD, but the branch said the model I booked was in for repairs so I couldn’t have it (no idea if that was actually true). They said I could “upgrade” to a pickup, which made no sense since we had huge suitcases, so the only SUV option left was to upgrade to a Ford Everest. The price wasn’t crazy, about 60 RMB per day. They ended up giving us the Platinum version – great spec, V6 diesel with full-time 4WD, perfect for all the different road conditions on the South Island – so we didn’t bother arguing at the counter, but it still felt like a bit of a sneaky upsell. In terms of driving, the Everest was totally fine: RWD on tarmac, switchable 4WD off-road, more than enough. The paint was tough too, all those flying stones didn’t leave any visible scratches. Only downside: it guzzles fuel – 80L of diesel for about 650km of range.

Pick-up and return were both pretty smooth. No pushy upselling either—they just asked once if I wanted extra roadside assistance, I said no, and that was it. Super convenient overall. The car itself was big and roomy, really comfortable to ride in, and it was basically brand new with under 8,000 km on it, so big thumbs up! Only downside is the fuel consumption—just over 10L per 100 km, so not exactly economical.
