Towards any New Zealand islands, taking rental cars is allowed and free of charge.

For rentals starting on one island and ending on the other, the below new process will apply. Two separate bookings will now be required Dollar has depots right on the main lnterislander Ferry terminal at Wellington and Picton. For rentals starting and ending on the same island, but travelling on both islands, please keep the same vehicle for the entire duration of the trip. Please keep in mind that the customer will need to pay for the vehicle on two ferry trips. A fee will be charged if the vehicle is not returned to the same island it was rented from. Hertz will assess a fee based on the actual cost of relocating the vehicle, up to a maximum of NZD$1,000, plus GST.

Ferry Transportation: Allowed

Dollar allows you to bring the rental vehicle on the ferry. However ferry companies may charge you to bring a vehicle across Cook Strait.

The service at the rental company was average. There were no Chinese-speaking staff, and the electronic contract was too quick to read on their tablet, with no printed version provided. The most crucial issue was that there were no staff present to inspect the car both at pickup and drop-off. We encountered unexplained charges after exchanging the car, and the company has yet to provide a reason for the charges. Be cautious when choosing this company!

You get the key and pick up the car yourself from the parking lot; when returning the car, I happened to meet a staff member who was parking and told me it was Hertz's, so I could just hand over the key without going to the office. Car was fine, no issues. Was a bit confused about drop off (picked up in Hertz spot but was a Dollar rental, not sure where to drop off but figured it out) However when we arrived home found I was charged and extra $25 for fuel. We filled it to full 1km from the airport and have photo proof that the gauge was full. Took about 40 minutes of calling and emailing to try to get this sorted. This was already charged to my credit card without any consultation with me. Still waiting for resolution.
