This was my first time renting a car in New Zealand, driving through the South Island from the central route to the eastern route. Over 9 days, I drove more than 1500 kilometers and was very satisfied overall. The hybrid vehicle was fuel-efficient and provided an excellent driving experience, even better than my own gasoline car. Andrew, the staff member at the shop, was extremely helpful and patiently explained everything. He even recommended a local weather forecast app and quickly assisted in answering my questions about snow chains.
I purchased full insurance with zero excess. At a scenic spot parking lot, the car window was smashed. I couldn't reach the police or the car rental company by phone. Since it was winter in the southern hemisphere, the temperature dropped sharply after sunset, but the rental company kept suggesting I wait where I was. Afraid the children would get cold, I took photos and drove the damaged car back to the rental office. The staff replaced the car but said the new vehicle would not have any insurance coverage, and additional insurance couldn't be purchased, which is extremely unreasonable. The rental platform's customer service responded quickly, but they couldn't provide effective assistance.
Diesel car, very new and fuel-efficient. Our group of 6 people managed to fit 4 28-inch suitcases, 2 24-inch suitcases, and several bags. One of the 24-inch suitcases was placed in the middle of the second row.
The staff at the pickup location had a poor attitude. They changed our vehicle model without informing or explaining to us. Instead, they forcefully stated that the car we selected was no longer available. However, when we went to the parking lot, the car we originally chose was still parked there and was later taken by another group of customers who picked it up after us. This directly contradicted what the staff member—specifically the lady at the rental counter—told us when she claimed that our chosen model was already gone. The lack of explanation, combined with her terrible attitude, made the experience very unpleasant.
Quite good. The vehicle was in excellent condition, and the pickup and return process was convenient and efficient. No inspection was needed upon return; they just confirmed everything was fine and it was done.
