The overall service feels very American. The staff at the AVIS store are very friendly and operate in a completely different manner compared to domestic services. No matter how many people are waiting to pick up their cars, they work at their own pace without any sense of urgency. Be patient; picking up a car typically takes over half an hour.

When picking up the car, they forced me to choose the Gas Service. I said I wanted to return the car full, but when I asked what it was, they said I could return it full as long as I refilled the tank at a gas station within 3 miles of the airport before returning the car, and there would be no charge. I told them I didn’t want prepaid gas, but they claimed it wasn’t prepaid and assured me if I returned the car with a full tank, I wouldn’t be charged. I fell for their trick! Before returning the car, I even refueled at the nearest gas station within 1 mile of the airport, but the following day I discovered that my pre-authorization was charged over $60! What kind of ridiculous practice is this? Does anyone check this?

Service attitude, waiting time, and vehicle condition need to be addressed separately: Our flight arrived at 10 PM local time, and we got to the rental office around 11 PM. Many rental companies are located on the same floor, and some had no staff at their counters. AVIS had the longest line, which we didn’t expect. After waiting for half an hour, it was our turn. The procedure was normal. The clerk asked if we needed an SUV and how many people and luggage we had, then gave us a Jeep Cherokee. I asked if it was the Grand Cherokee, and he said yes. When we went to pick up the car, we realized the model was much smaller than what we booked. We called the rental company several times but they needed time to process it. Eventually, we went back to the counter, by then the male clerk had gone off duty and we were helped by a female clerk. She admitted we were given a downgraded car and offered a full tank of gas as compensation, which didn't matter much as gas is cheap in the US. We asked for the price difference, and she printed out the receipt showing a difference of $220. It was clear we were downgraded without any notice. After confirming the downgraded price, we took the car since they didn't have the same class available. This whole process took us a long time and we got to our hotel very late, making this experience very unpleasant.

“Avis was great- EasyREntCars not so much”

Like: Once I found where I was supposed to be, the Avis agent was nice and very tolerant of my pissed off demeanor.
Dislike: When I searched for 'rental cars' in Sitka, AK I tried AVIS first but they were all sold out, so I began looking for any car rental company. EasyRentCars came up in the search. When making the reservation, I selected "Downtown Sitka" as the pick up location, then submitted the reservation. I then received an email saying that it would take 1-3 days for me to receive a confirmation of my reservation. NOT GOOD- I was going to be on a cruise ship with no way of checking email. Also NOT GOOD was that the response had a different pick up location- the Airport- which is NOT downtown Sitka, which meant i would need to take a cab from the ship to the airport. I emailed them and got a snotty response about me not selecting the correct location, which is not true since I know Sitka very well and picked Downtown on purpose. Each port I docked in, I had to try to connect to Wi-Fi to check emails....and not once did I ever receive a confirmation email. So on the day of my arrival, I had no idea if I even had a car or not, or where to pick it up, so I ended up paying for a cab to take me to the airport so I could look for EasyRentCars- which did not exist. I wandered over to the Avis counter to ask the guy if he'd heard of EasyRentCars and oddly enough he had my reservation at the Avis desk and said that EasyREntCars was just a go-between. I was quite pissed at that point...never in any communication with EasyRentCars did they even mention that this was Avis.
