I returned the car locally on the evening of July 31, and the pre-authorization deposit was refunded by 1 AM domestic time. The refund was so prompt that I only noticed it days later when checking my account. Honestly, before the deposit was refunded, I was still concerned about the 'issues car rental companies might bring up' mentioned by others, but when the full deposit was returned, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. With that, my European trip concluded perfectly!
