After landing at the airport, I decided to upgrade my original booking to a Mercedes-Benz CLA. I paid an extra £40 plus 57p tax, and the nice thing about the upgrade was that I didn’t have to return the car with a full charge.

AVIS closes at 3 p.m. on Saturdays. That day I couldn’t find the key drop-off box, so I didn’t manage to return the keys before they closed. To avoid any misunderstanding, I emailed AVIS right away to explain that the car had already been returned, but since I couldn’t locate the drop box, I took the keys with me and would bring them back first thing the next morning.

Early the next day, I went back to the branch just to return the keys. Thankfully, there were no extra charges. The staff later told me the key drop-off box is mounted right up against the wall and is really discreet, so it’s easy to miss if you’re not looking carefully.

The AVIS staff member who helped me this time was very patient and had a great attitude. He even suggested that I could contact him directly next time I need to rent a car, which felt really thoughtful. But now my biggest concern is actually the insurance. When I booked through QEEQ before, I used the insurance provided by the Chinese platform, which I’m familiar with and find easier to buy, communicate about and claim on. If I rent directly in the UK in the future, I’m not sure how I should arrange the insurance, what level of coverage is really necessary, what protections I shouldn’t skip, and how straightforward the claims process would be if something happened. Those questions still make me a bit uneasy and confused.

Brand-new car and everything went smoothly overall. The only hiccup was being charged an extra day because I picked up the car about ten minutes early, but luckily QEEQ helped sort it out after we talked it through.

Pretty good overall. Just a heads‑up: make sure you specifically request a petrol car, otherwise they’ll give you an EV. Electric cars are really inconvenient in the UK, especially if you’re heading up to the Highlands—charging can be a real pain. Luckily the staff realized we were going to the Highlands and quickly switched us to a petrol car. Big thumbs‑up for their service.

They opened right at 10 and there was already a long line at the door. It took quite a while to actually get the car, but aside from that everything was fine.

The car was great – basically brand new and really powerful. It even felt like there was some steering assist when turning, automatically adjusting a bit so it was easier to handle. I realized the insurance I bought didn’t really cover damage. The guy at the rental counter said if you don’t buy the extra coverage, any damage could cost you over £1,000, but with it you only pay £100 per incident. I ended up adding that on the spot, around £18 per day.

Pickup and return were both super smooth. I showed up over an hour late and asked if I could bring the car back a bit later too. The lovely lady at the counter agreed to give me an extra two hours, and she handed over a very new, super high-tech car that was spotless and filled up. During the rental the tire pressure warning came on, so I went back to the store and they adjusted it right away—everyone there was really nice. Return was also easy. A few minutes after I left, a handsome staff member actually ran out to the street to return the credit card I’d forgotten on the front passenger seat. I was really touched. Big thumbs up!

Paperwork at the big-city branch was processed pretty quickly.

Super convenient location right by Guildford Station. They gave us a shiny BYD hybrid – really comfortable, loads of space, and great on fuel.

We had an accident during the rental and it was completely our fault. After we contacted the rental company, they immediately sent a tow truck to take the car to the nearest branch and arranged a replacement on the spot.

Booked a Citroen C3 but got a Peugeot 208 instead. Since it’s the same category and the car was very new (registered in 2026), it drove really well and everything was great over the 4 days we used it. Pick-up at London City Airport was fast, but the rental staff didn’t come with me to inspect the car—they just handed me the keys and told me which bay it was in, so you really have to take your own photos and videos for your records. We returned the car at Manchester Airport, where a staff member checked the car with us on the spot and completed all the paperwork right away—very quick and efficient.

They do try to upsell you a bit, so just keep an eye on that, but overall it was fine.

I booked a Peugeot Citroën 5008 for Monday, and since they happened to have one available, they even upgraded me to a 9-seater for free.

The pickup went pretty smoothly overall. Nobody tried to hard-sell me anything, and even though the staff weren’t exactly warm or chatty, everything got done without issues, which I’m pretty happy about. I did forget to bring the physical translation of my license when I picked up the car. They wouldn’t accept a photo or an online version; they insisted on seeing the actual document. Luckily I had my Brazilian driver’s license with me, and they accepted that.

Overall the communication went pretty smoothly, and even without an upgrade they didn’t make a fuss about anything.

Bought the insurance locally and it was a bit pricey.
