AVIS Car Rental with Exotic Car

This was my first time booking with this company because the one I used during the Lunar New Year was less satisfactory, so I decided to try this one. Overall, it was okay. When picking up the car, I didn’t see a self-service machine, so I had to interact with a staff member, which was a bit awkward. Their attitude wasn’t great. For the car model, they asked us to check online for differences instead of showing us photos, which other companies usually do. Also, they kept trying to upsell an upgrade, and it was easy to misunderstand since they mentioned it several times and my English isn’t that good.

At noon on Friday, there were hardly any customers at the counter. Providing a passport, credit card, and driver’s license was all it took, and we clarified the insurance and unlimited mileage terms before finalizing the contract smoothly (if no one is available at AVIS, you can also check with the Budget counter next door). For later issues, you can simply contact them via WhatsApp. When my tire was punctured, AVIS staff told me to visit a tire shop and then call them. They directly communicated with the shop over the phone, and the tire was repaired for just 100 EGP.

I rented a fuel-powered car but was given an electric one. The range of this electric car was less than 200km, completely ruining our trip.

The customer service staff added various insurances without informing the customers and asked for electronic signatures before showing the complete contract. They focus only on sneaking in extra charges, completely disregarding customer experience. No email receipt was provided upon checkout.

The influx of people arriving in Los Angeles is huge, and it takes three hours in the morning around 7 a.m. As a result, there are many car rental customers, and the store has long queues. Although I informed the store staff that I purchased full insurance through Zuzuche, they still added extra insurance and a refueling service. Therefore, make sure to carefully review the terms before signing during the pre-authorization process!

Just a reminder about the gas station: the nearest one does not accept international credit cards or cash. You'll need to go to a larger supermarket's gas station a bit further away. I also shared this issue with the rental company.

I reserved a Sienna from the AVIS Detroit airport location, but upon arrival, they gave me a Dodge Caravan with 70,000 miles on it. Then, after driving the Caravan for two hours, the engine light came on indicating a fault. Feeling really concerned, I drove to the AVIS location at Toledo Airport with the warning light on to exchange the car, and they ended up giving me a Toyota 4Runner. Overall: Poor experience, low-quality vehicles provided! It wasted my travel time and ruined my travel experience.

They charged me 272 euros for tire wear within 10 minutes after I returned the car, without mentioning it earlier. They only deducted the fee after I left. Moreover, the vehicle was very small.

If you don't schedule a return time in advance, staff might not be on-site. They upgraded me to a bigger Renault, but the car was old and had already run 60,000 kilometers. For mountain areas with poor road conditions, a high-clearance vehicle is definitely necessary.

I booked a Toyota Sienna in advance, but when I picked up the car, they swapped it for a Chrysler Pacifica without any explanation. The problem is that the replacement car was in terrible condition. The car system was in Spanish, completely unusable. The steering wheel had a lot of play, making driving exhausting. The transmission had noticeable jerks at low speeds. The suspension was overly soft, and the brakes were even softer—completely unreliable in emergencies. The tires also had poor grip, and when changing lanes even at slightly higher speeds, you could hear the rear tires squealing. The driving experience was awful. It seems like the car wasn't properly maintained. Even the provided tank of gas caused poor acceleration. I added a full tank of 93-octane gas at Costco, which made it slightly better. What annoyed me the most was that there was a Sienna parked right there when I picked up the car, but they still didn't give it to me. What was that about???
