For foreign renters, you need to bring:
Original Driver License + Temporary Sri Lankan Driving Licence
To obtain a temporary Sri Lankan driving license, you are required to bring your original driving license, an International Driving Permit (IDP), your passport, and a clear passport-sized photo of yourself to DMT (Department of Motor Traffic). The cost is about 50 EUR and it's subject to the local charge standard.(Please note this process will take a couple of hours and the DMT office is open only on Mon - Fri from 8.30 am till 3.30 pm.)
Customers with an IDP must obtain the required permit through the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) in Colombo. Customers without an IDP can apply for a temporary driving permit through the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT), including at the 24/7 DMT counter at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) upon arrival. The government fee is USD 45 for 1 month or USD 63 for 2 months.
